Inside Look at the Phoenix Zoo: Arizona Center for Nature Conservation

Speaker: Bonnie Mendoza, Chief Operating & Financial Officer |Arizona Center for Nature Conservation / Phoenix Zoo    

Bonnie grew up in Mesa and currently resides in south Tempe along with her husband, with whom she raised five sons. Bonnie earned her BS in Accounting from the WP Carey School of Business at Arizona State University and began her career in public accounting with Price Waterhouse in 1989.  She worked for the Arizona Republic and then became the Assistant Corporate Controller of their parent company Central Newspapers, Inc. from 1992-2000.  She spent three years as Controller of Providence Development, a home builder in Mesa and she has been with the Phoenix Zoo since 2003 progressing from Controller to CFO and recently promoted to the Chief Operating Officer role.

Early on after graduating from ASU, Bonnie participated on the ASU Hispanic Business Student Association Alumni Board and the Inroads Alumni Board. She has formerly also served on the Board of the East Valley Boys Service Club, the Community Advisory Board for the Junior League of Phoenix and was the Board Treasurer of Florence Crittenton of Arizona.  She spent several years on the Finance Council of her church Holy Spirit, and currently serves on the Audit Committee for the national non-profit organization, Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA). In 2022, Bonnie was selected to participate in AZA’s Executive Leadership Development Program (ELDP), a cohort of ten leaders aspiring to advance their careers in the field of zoos and aquariums. 

Bonnie is an executive with 30+ years of progressive experience in public accounting, newspaper publishing, homebuilding, zoological parks and other non-profits. She is highly skilled in strategic planning, financial reporting and analysis and has in-depth experience in leading cross-departmental teams. She possesses an advanced understanding of organizational development, business risk, capital improvement planning, and business development evaluation, with considerable involvement in marketing, donor development, event planning, facility management, human resources and guest services. Bonnie is a collaborative team-player and exemplary leader with a focus on trust, accountability, staff development and transparency.
